A tender and juicy pulled pork recipe slow-cooked with a smoky-sweet maple bourbon BBQ sauce, perfect for easy weeknight dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 lbs pork shoulder (Boston Butt)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup bourbon
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Trim any large fat chunks from the pork shoulder and pat dry.
  2. Mix salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic, and smoked paprika in a small bowl and rub all over the pork.
  3. Whisk together BBQ sauce, maple syrup, bourbon, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes if using.
  4. Optional: Brown the pork shoulder in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side.
  5. Pour chicken broth into the slow cooker, place pork inside, and pour the maple bourbon BBQ sauce over the pork. Cover with lid.
  6. Cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or HIGH for 4-6 hours until pork is tender and shreds easily.
  7. Remove pork and shred with forks or meat claws. Return shredded pork to slow cooker and mix with sauce.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve warm.

Notes

Optional searing of pork adds extra flavor but can be skipped. Keep an eye on liquid levels during cooking to avoid dryness. For thicker sauce, cook uncovered on HIGH for 20-30 minutes at the end. Substitute bourbon with apple juice or extra broth for milder flavor. Use gluten-free BBQ sauce for gluten-free version.
