Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 corn tortillas (tostada shells or regular corn tortillas fried or baked until crispy)
  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Juice of 1 lime (about 2 tbsp)
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce or cabbage
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes or pico de gallo
  • 1/4 cup crumbled queso fresco or shredded cheddar (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying tostadas (if not baking)

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and break apart with a spatula.
  2. Sprinkle chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper over the beef. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and fully cooked with a juicy, crumbly texture.
  3. To crisp tostada shells, either fry tortillas in 1/2 inch of hot oil (350°F) for 1–2 minutes per side until golden and crispy, then drain on paper towels, or bake tortillas on a baking sheet at 400°F for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  4. Make the avocado crema by blending or whisking together avocado, sour cream or Greek yogurt, lime juice, minced garlic, and salt until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Assemble tostadas by spreading cooked beef evenly over each crispy shell. Top with shredded lettuce or cabbage, diced tomatoes or pico de gallo, and a drizzle of avocado crema.
  6. Sprinkle crumbled queso fresco or shredded cheese if using, and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
  7. Serve immediately to maintain crunch. If preparing ahead, keep components separate and assemble just before serving.

Notes

Avoid stirring beef constantly to allow browning for better flavor. If avocado crema is too thick, add a teaspoon or two of water to loosen. Fry tortillas at steady 350°F oil temperature for best crispiness. Store beef and crema separately if making ahead. Use lime juice to prevent avocado crema browning.
