Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) store-bought caramel sauce or homemade caramel
  • 1/4 cup (30g) chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C) and line a 9×9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream the softened butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Add the flour and salt, mixing until combined. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake the crust for 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Set aside to cool slightly.
  4. In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated.
  5. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the cooled crust.
  6. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apples, ensuring an even coating. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if using.
  7. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the caramel is bubbling.
  8. Let the bars cool completely before slicing into squares.

Notes

[‘Chill the crust for 10 minutes before baking for a firmer texture.’, ‘Slice apples uniformly for consistent cooking.’, ‘Use room-temperature caramel for even spreading.’, ‘Let the bars cool completely before slicing to prevent them from falling apart.’, ‘Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the apples; it should slide through easily.’]
