Irresistible Caramel Apple Puppy Chow Recipe for Fall Snacking

A quick and easy no-bake treat combining sweet caramel, tart apple flavors, and crunchy cereal for the perfect fall snack.

  • 6 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1 cup caramel bits
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice (optional)
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • Dried apple slices, chopped into bite-sized pieces

Instructions

  1. Measure out 6 cups of Rice Chex cereal and place it in a large mixing bowl. Chop the dried apple slices into small, bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup of caramel bits and 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each until smooth. This should take about 1–2 minutes.
  3. Stir 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (and 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice, if using) into the melted caramel mixture until evenly combined.
  4. Pour the warm caramel mixture over the Rice Chex cereal in the large mixing bowl. Gently stir with a wooden spoon until all the cereal is evenly coated. Be careful not to crush the cereal!
  5. Mix the chopped dried apple slices into the caramel-coated cereal.
  6. Transfer the coated cereal mixture into a large zip-top bag. Add 1½ cups of powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake until the pieces are evenly coated. (Tip: Don’t overfill the bag; you can work in batches if needed.)
  7. Spread the coated puppy chow onto a large sheet of parchment paper to cool and set for about 10 minutes. Once completely cool, transfer to a serving bowl or airtight container.
