A quick and easy grilled asparagus recipe coated with olive oil and freshly grated Parmesan, delivering a crispy, golden crust and a bright, cheesy flavor. Perfect as a side dish for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 small lemon, juiced
  • Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Optional: balsamic glaze for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Rinse 1 pound of fresh asparagus under cold water. Snap off the woody ends by gently bending each stalk near the bottom until it naturally breaks.
  2. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (around 400°F). If using a grill pan, heat it over medium-high on the stove for 3-5 minutes until hot.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, toss the trimmed asparagus with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil until evenly coated. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon sea salt, and ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Toss gently to distribute the spices.
  4. Sprinkle ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the asparagus. Toss gently to coat the stalks with cheese without overmixing.
  5. Lay the asparagus spears perpendicular to the grill grates. Grill for about 3-4 minutes per side until tender with a slight char and the Parmesan is golden and crispy. Use tongs to flip gently.
  6. Remove from grill and immediately squeeze fresh lemon juice over the asparagus. Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of red pepper flakes or drizzle balsamic glaze.
  7. Transfer to a serving plate and enjoy immediately while the Parmesan crust is still crispy.

Notes

If asparagus stalks are very thick, blanch them in boiling water for 1-2 minutes before grilling to ensure tenderness without burning. Keep grill temperature medium-high to avoid burning the Parmesan. Freshly grate Parmesan just before grilling for best results. For dairy-free option, substitute Parmesan with nutritional yeast. If no grill is available, roast in oven at 425°F for 12-15 minutes.
