These crispy air fryer mozzarella sticks feature a double-coated, golden-brown crust and a gooey cheese pull, making them a crowd-pleasing snack or appetizer. Healthier than deep-fried versions, they’re quick to make and perfect for parties, movie nights, or anytime you crave comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks (whole milk recommended)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup Italian-style or panko breadcrumbs (or a mix)
  • 1/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray (for air fryer basket)
  • Optional: Marinara sauce, ranch dressing, hot sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Unwrap 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks and cut each in half for bite-size pieces (24 sticks total).
  2. Set up breading station: Place flour in one shallow bowl, beaten eggs in a second, and combine breadcrumbs, parmesan, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a third bowl.
  3. Roll each mozzarella stick in flour (tap off excess), dip in egg (let excess drip), then coat generously in breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps for a double coating on each stick.
  5. Arrange breaded sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C).
  7. Lightly spray air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange frozen sticks in a single layer, spray tops lightly with cooking spray.
  8. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway. Watch closely after 5 minutes to prevent cheese from bursting out.
  9. Transfer sticks to a plate using tongs. Let cool for 1 minute, then serve hot with your favorite dip.

Notes

Freeze sticks thoroughly before air frying to prevent cheese leakage. Double-coating is essential for a crispy crust and to keep cheese inside. For gluten-free or vegan adaptations, substitute gluten-free flour/breadcrumbs and dairy-free cheese. Watch closely during cooking; cheese can burst out if overcooked. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
