A quick and easy appetizer featuring creamy unsalted butter spread with honey and fresh herbs, perfect for gatherings or a cozy night in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) honey
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (chives finely chopped, thyme leaves stripped, parsley roughly chopped)
  • Pinch of sea salt flakes (Maldon or fleur de sel)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
  • Crusty bread or crackers (sourdough or multigrain) for serving

Instructions

  1. Soften the unsalted butter at room temperature for 20-30 minutes until soft but not melted. Alternatively, microwave in 5-second bursts, checking often (about 10-15 seconds total).
  2. Finely chop chives and parsley, and strip thyme leaves from stems. Measure about 2 tablespoons total.
  3. Spread the softened butter evenly over a cutting board or serving platter, aiming for a 10×12 inch rectangle or circle.
  4. Slowly drizzle 2 tablespoons of honey over the butter, creating pools and ribbons.
  5. Scatter the chopped fresh herbs evenly across the honey-drizzled butter.
  6. Finish with a pinch of sea salt flakes and a few cracks of freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Serve immediately with crusty bread or crackers. Cover and refrigerate leftovers for up to 24 hours; bring back to room temperature before serving.

Notes

Use high-quality unsalted butter for best flavor and spreadability. Softened butter should be creamy but not melted to avoid greasy texture. Fresh herbs add brightness; dried herbs are not recommended. Drizzle honey slowly for visual appeal. Add sea salt flakes last to preserve crunch. Can be prepared up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated; bring to room temperature before serving.
