A warm and inviting apple pie featuring cinnamon-spiced apples and a buttery crumb topping that is easy to make and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups peeled, sliced apples (about 6 medium apples; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (can swap half with whole wheat flour)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Position the oven rack in the center.
  2. Peel, core, and slice about 6 medium apples into 1/4-inch slices.
  3. In a large bowl, toss apples with 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (if using), and 1 tablespoon lemon juice until evenly coated.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture to a 9-inch pie dish, spreading evenly. Dot with 1 tablespoon melted butter.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  6. Add 1/2 cup cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or two forks to cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling without packing it down.
  8. Bake the pie for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Cover loosely with foil after 30 minutes if topping browns too quickly.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

Keep butter cold when mixing crumb topping to ensure a flaky, crunchy texture. Do not overwork the topping to avoid greasiness. If topping browns too fast, cover with foil after 30 minutes. Use lemon juice on apples to prevent browning. For gluten-free, substitute flours accordingly. For dairy-free, use coconut oil or vegan margarine instead of butter.
