A hearty and healthier twist on the classic shepherd’s pie, featuring ground turkey and a crispy potato crust. Perfect for chilly nights and family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, boil the diced potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and mash them with milk, butter, and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and carrots, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground turkey. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  5. Pour in the chicken broth and add the frozen peas. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). Transfer the turkey filling to a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the filling, smoothing them into an even layer. Use a fork to create texture for a crispier crust.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the potatoes for extra richness, if desired.
  8. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy.
  9. Allow the pie to rest for a few minutes before serving.
