A warm and comforting Southern dish featuring tender sweet onions, creamy cheese, and a crispy breadcrumb topping. Perfect for family gatherings, holidays, or cozy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 sweet onions (Vidalia preferred), peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian-style)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings, about 1/4-inch thick.
  3. Layer the onion slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly to ensure even coverage.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, mayonnaise, and sour cream until smooth and creamy.
  5. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the onion slices, ensuring they are well-coated.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Swiss cheese generously over the onions. Follow with a layer of grated Parmesan cheese.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with a pinch of garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle this mixture over the cheese layer to create a crispy topping.
  8. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the top is golden and bubbling.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

[‘Use Vidalia onions for their mild, sugary flavor.’, ‘Slice onions evenly for consistent cooking.’, ‘Shred your own cheese for better melting.’, ‘Cover the dish with foil if the topping browns too quickly.’, ‘Let the dish rest for 5 minutes after baking for better flavor.’]
